I Love Cats

One of my favorite pastimes besides music is playing with my cat GiGI. We have owned her for over 8 years and you just have to love the presence, independence and leisurely life cats have. I named her after my dad G.G. who passed away in 1996. We thought Gigi was a he. The fact is all male cats have only two colors while females have three. Check that fact out. I haven’t missed yet. Cats are grace in motion. Knowing how much I adore cats, my son sent me these funny videos from college. Here they are!!!!!! Enjoy!!!!!!

A few years back, I attended a Music Conference for church and school music called Music in the Mountains sponsored by Shawnee Press. It is a bi-annual conference located at the University of Stroudsburg in Pennsylvania. During one of the sessions I heard some Jazz Church Music by a man named Chuck Marohnic from the University of Arizona. So during one of the breaks I found his music (Sanctuary Jazz) and bought a Trilogy of Christmas Music as well as American Classics. Wow!!! Talk about impressive!!! I am not an avid lover of jazz even though I am a musician, but this was a pleasing connection for me. I later googled him, and we have since been writing to each other via e-mail and every once and a while I will try to schedule a visit to one of his conferences. However, my schedule does not coincide during the weekend conferences he gives and since he is retired now, our schedules do not coincide at all. But, one of these day…………

I have included some resource material should you happen to be interested. To me, he quite literally opened up the door for innovative church music and in a larger way my interest in jazz.

Westchester County School Music Association

WCSMA is the Westchester County School Music Association. It is a county unit of the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) and the Music Educators National Conference (MENC).
It represents over 450 music educators from 55 school districts both public, private and parochial. Each year over 1200 students from across Westchester County participate in our Festivals.

This post is dedicated to my love of music history and to two wonderful composers I just love to teach my students each year- Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) and Aaron Copland (1900-1990). Since it is almost time to celebrate Aaron Copland’s Birthday, (November 14th) I dedicated this post to him. His influence on American Music has been profound. We hear his music in so many different venues- from cartoons to the concert hall and everything in between. From his humble beginnings as an immigrant in Brooklyn to his rise as a composer, pianist, scholar and conductor, Aaron Copland has reminded us that the music he composed and loved was derived largely from western European Classical Music as well as his early American influences. His music reflects those distinct combinations that helped form his own brand of American Classical music.

Mozart was simply a genius and the incredible amount of music that he composed beginning at the age of 2, attests to this fact. In his short 35year of living, this man was able to compose over 600 musical compositions. Unbelievable!!!!!

One of the neatest magazines that highlights almost every state-of -the-art musical recording equipment as well as the most technological savvy instruments is called In Tune Monthly Teachers Edition. It usually highlights one famous musician and and contains a variety sorts articles to listen from and read about. The articles cover the spectrum from for example what a microphone is made up of to how to get started in the music business. There are numerous and educational article giving musical sound advice and tips. The short articles are also hands-on for middle school students who have music rather infrequently and rely upon a 40 minute period every few days. Except for the the high-school, Music classes run every 3 to 4 days unfortunately.
